Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation. TMS devices operate completely outside of the body and affect central nervous system activity by applying powerful magnetic fields to specific areas of the brain that are involved in depression.

TMS is generally well tolerated as compared to the side effects often seen with medications and other treatments for depression. The most common side effect is headache during or after treatment.

It is important to acknowledge that these results, while encouraging, are not always permanent. Like all other treatments for mood disorders, symptoms can re-occur.  Most TMS patients feel better for many months after treatment stops, with the average length of response being a little more than a year. Many patients whose symptoms return come back for subsequent treatments.

What Does TMS Therapy Entail?

TMS therapy is an intensive treatment option requiring 20 minute sessions that occur five-days-a-week for four weeks. When patients arrive, they will briefly check in with a technician or doctor and then begin the stimulation process.

Though one session may be enough to change the brain’s level of excitability, relief isn’t usually noticeable until the third or fourth week of treatment. A rare but serious side effect is seizures, and TMS may not be appropriate for people at high risk such as those with epilepsy, a history of head injury, or other serious neurologic issues.

How Much Does It Cost?

For patients with commercial insurance, our pre-authorization specialists will work with you and your insurer to obtain approval prior to starting treatment. For patients without insurance we have several self-pay options available.

"Their entire team is FABULOUS. They have always treated me with dignity and respect. I have watched them with other clients as well and I see their genuine compassion for everyone that walks thru the door. Dr Park has been a life and marriage saver for me and he is amazingly efficient. He gets done in 1-2 sessions what would take 6 months for another counselor because he doesn't dance around the issues. To do this, he may be more blunt with you than you might have experienced before and that may be off putting to some. If you are ready to do the hard work to make your life enjoyable again, Dr Park is your man! He also got me hooked up with TMS. If you are someone that has struggled with depression for a long time and taken Rx that hasn't been effective, talk to someone about TMS. It's a game changer. It may sound like hokey fake science.
